SRRT (Social Responsibilities Round Table)

last person joined: yesterday

The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

There was a hearing before the House Higher Education Committee Monday. Looks like it is on the agenda again 3/25. The Georgia Library Association has an advocacy page with more information: https://gla.georgialibraries.org/divisions/advocacy-division/

SB390 won't hurt ALA or rich Georgians; it will hurt poor communities in Georgia.

Look at the people behind SB390. Linda Most used to be the Head of the MLIS department at Valdosta, and she serves as the current Chair of the board for certification of librarians. Attached is her viewpoint of the certified librarian law in a conversation we had in her human resources class last year. The regional model has already been practiced for years in Georgia.

At least if SB390 goes through, certification will pass to GLA and the cost will decrease from $80 to free.

    Best regards,

It will hurt all Georgia communities, libraries, library workers & MLS students who want to work in academic libraries or outside of Georgia. No professional development funds for books, webinars, conferences from any ALA affiliates - no PLA, no AASL, no ACRL. Even if you use your own money you won't be able to get reimbursed. ALA can't even be paid with private funds the library has. No in state tuition. The only MLS in the state will be from an (eventually) unaccredited program. No grants. Three Georgia libraries may even have to refuse the grants they were awarded from Libraries Transforming Communities. No help from the ALA Washington office with lobbying for federal funds. It's a ridiculous bill.

I have! Before the hearing last week & again today. I know my rep Katie Dempsey a little bit-small town. She'll know my politics. Hoping she can set politics aside & see reason.
