The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

Event title: Free book talk & facilitated discussion of Matthew Desmond's Poverty, By America

Description: The United States is the richest nation in the world, but has more people experiencing poverty than any other advanced democracy. Please join ALA's Social Responsibility Roundtable to explore this fundamental paradox and engage in critical inquiry and communal conversation. Using Matthew Desmond's recently-published book Poverty, By America as our anchor, we'll consider questions like: What factors contribute to the persistence of poverty in America? Who benefits from it? How are libraries approaching this issue? Please join us!

Date: Thursday, July 13 at 1:00 pm CST

Co-Hosts: Rachel Rosekind (rosekindness@gmail.com) and Derek Wilmott (robert.wilmott@utoledo.edu)
