SRRT (Social Responsibilities Round Table)

The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

There is a discussion on the ALA Members Connect group about the public nature of Connect, and the privacy implications of group settings. It seems that a lot of groups, including this one, have the group settings in Connect set to "public," but may not be aware that the result of this is that our posts are findable through a simple Google search.  I just discovered this myself the other day, and I didn't like it. I'm not sure there's clarity about what the settings mean. I think maybe we should review this.

When SRRT had to move our discussion list to Connect, we had discussions about making the main SRRT Community public or closed. At that time, we went with public because we thought that was the best way to share what SRRT is working on and would also be the best way to help people interested in the work of SRRT remain involved if ALA membership was not financially possible for them.

Even though that was just a few years ago, things have changed a lot. We made the decision before anti-library movements became mainstream and before people would regularly mine library-related sites for ammunition to use against us.

So, I agree, it is probably worth revisiting.

Thanks for bringing this up, Rory. As April said, there were discussions, and it was a different time. I can note this as an agenda item for our next AC meeting, if folks feel this would be an appropriate venue for discussion. Thanks, Rachel

Thanks everyone. I also think that whatever we decide, we should ask the ALA Connect team - if they aren't already working on this - to find a way to make visibility settings on each connect group clearer to visitors.
