The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

The only way to find this link is to go to the ALA Council Connect space.

I agree with that officers should be voted on by general round table membership. But to disallow any at-large roles....what an insult to all the hard working people who have given their valuable free time to round table governance. As Derek mentioned before, if it was not my involvement with Action Council, I would have never served as an officer or the gajillion other things I've done in the last 7 years of SRRT membership.

Every year of my Action Council terms, I was either Coordinator, Coordinator-Elect, or Past-Coordinator. Nothing I did in these roles was in a bubble. I needed others in Action Council to bounce ideas off of, provide historical context, connect me to the right person or resource, help guide and improve my work, or sometimes just to commensurate with.

I believe there is a danger with having too small of a governing body. It's easy for someone to unintentionally appoint people to work with that are like them, thus creating an accidental echo chamber or further marginalizing those who already must fight to be seen and heard. There is value in having diverse opinions, including loyal opposition. It makes us better leaders.

In regards to Action 5 that would force the SRRT Newsletter to be published by ALA Publishing & Media, did that pass too?

Thanks April. Action 5 passed but it was stated that it did not cover newsletters.

The most obvious thing to do next is to add it as an agenda item at the Action Council. Come prepared to discuss how to respond to these changes with facts. What are steps we can take? How do we build a coalition with other round tables, if that is the direction we would like to take?
