The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

  • 1.  Kudos and recognition of SRRT work at ALA in Philadelphia

    Hello SRRT colleagues,

I would like to report the following good work recognized by members of SRRT shared with me at the conference in Philadelphia this weekend.

First: A shout out to the Elder Justice Task Force and their session this Sunday morning, highlighting the lessons learned and future steps your TF is taking to bring focus to an area I much need of attention by ALA. Your work in this area is inspirational. Thank you.

Second: Thank you, Olivia Blake and Al Kagan the panel session on Saturday morning with the independent publishers, and building radical social justice collections. One of the paths forward there is an interest to create an independent publisher committee in SRRT that explores avenues of collaboration for library workers and the independent publishers.

Third: Kudos to Frieda Afary and others who created the Social Responsibility Pathfinders on the SRRT website. While presenting my poster Sunday afternoon, two LIS students (who are members of SRRT) mentioned to me that they loved the SRRT resources, and one had used the pathfinder on the Palestinian Territories as a reference for their paper in graduate school. This is an example that the work we do is having a positive impact with others.

    Respectfully,

    Thanks Derek!

And I'll add to this a shout out to Derek's  informative and well attended poster session  on the work of the ODLOS Services to Refugees, Immigrants and Displaced Persons subcommittee. Thank you for the important work you're doing, Derek!
