The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

You are invited to join the Social Responsibility Round Table for the SRRT Chair's Program: Health Equity & Diversity.

Using excerpts from the award-winning PBS documentary, "The Calling," as a jumping off point, join the Social Responsibilities Round Table to discuss issues related to medical diversity and health equity. The focus of the film, and this session, is to raise awareness of the lack of diversity in the medical field - ranging from the challenges students of color face in becoming doctors to the detrimental impact the profession's lack of diversity has on medical outcomes for patients of color. Through short video profiles of three medical students of color, the audience will see the competence, commitment, and intelligence of the students and learn how their future work on the medical frontlines will make a positive difference. Our panel will discuss why physicians of color -- especially African Americans and Latinos, who represent only 5%-6% of practicing doctors -- are a critical linchpin in the broader struggle for health equity and justice. The panel will include Dr. Alexandra Perez, who was a 4th year student in the film, and is now a family practice doctor at Montefiore; Asako Gladsjo, the film's award-winning director; Dr. LeShuana Iyalekhue, M.D.; Dr. Cristina Gonzalez, whose research focuses on implicit bias recognition and management (IBRM); and Dr. Iren Blanco, M.D., Professor at the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University.
