The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

I just read the ALA Executive Board minutes from their January meetings. I had not seen mentioned elsewhere that they moved the Intellectual Freedom Office in Chicago under the Public Policy Advisory Office in DC. I suppose that means that they will not hire a new director for the office since the previous director recently left. Does that signal a demotion of IF concerns within the association?

I thought people would be more upset about this move when it was first announced. Maybe people are just to tired and frustrated with actions within ALA.

This person certainly is.  As MLK said I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired.

There is a mostly silent majority watching ALA aghast, voting with their feet.

I think people were definitely frustrated and appalled by the announcement of cutting the role in a time like this. I know I was. As a school librarian, I've looked to them for resources before. But I think it's just that most people are not vocally complaining. I'm not psyched about a lot of things ALA has recently done and am baffled by some of their decisions and what's going on. I tend to talk about it with other librarians or shake my head alone. So I think more people are angry than you realize.
