The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

IFRT Reads: Deep Reading Follow Up (Feb. 11)

We have really appreciated the sustained exchange of ideas and questions set off by the IFRT Reads discussion on Maryanne Wolf's Reader Come Home, and her concept of "deep reading."

Wolf believes that librarians and educators can play a critical role at the current "hinge moment" in history, and help people of all ages build on the human brain's "pluripotential capacities" in order to grow intellectually, affectively and morally.

Toward that aim, we invite you to a follow-up discussion on Tuesday, February 11th at 2 p.m. Eastern / 1 p.m. Central / noon Mountain / 11 a.m. Pacific to develop three training sessions for librarians and educators on the following topics:
    • Ways to help children learn to read with phonics, and use richer reading material from history, literature and the sciences.
    • Ways to help patrons of all ages reduce distraction and pay attention when reading or listening.
    • Ways to help people of all ages read for comprehension and with an inquisitive/critical mind.
The goal is to move from discussion into action as we develop materials that will allow you to continue these conversations in your community. You can register in advance for this meeting by following this link.

Thanks, and hope you can join us!
