The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

    Posted Dec 09, 2024 03:20 PM

We met today , December 9, 2024. There are two outstanding items  for SRRT:

ALA Code of Conduct  policy and procedure clarification (pending review) , no update at this time and this is being referred to SRRT Action Council for further guidance.

The right to peacefully protest (at the time of this meeting this was still pending submittal to the Resolutions Committee).

IFC will be meeting on January 13, 2025. At this meeting, IFC will be interviewing ALA presidential nominees. All are welcome to attend.

    Thank you,

    Lisa Gieskes, SRRT IFC Liaison

Thanks Lisa. I don't know what further guidance they need on the Code of Conduct. We asked for clarification on the rules. It is vague on what is permitted and what is not. Mark R's message was deleted because he referred to another organization's advocacy of a boycott. Others have not been deleted for somewhat similar content.

It is a shame that the consideration of our resolution supporting protestors has again been delayed.

So it seems we need to put the Code of Conduct back on the Action Council agenda.
