SRRT (Social Responsibilities Round Table)

The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

    Just a FYI -

The ALA Executive Board has approved the pricing proposal presented by the Membership Committee. This action item will be on the Council agenda for approval in January and if approved by Council will go into effect in FY 2025.

If approved, most regular member dues will be $125. Those making less than $45k, in staff positions, retired, or international will be $55. Associates, friends, and trustees will be $70. And finally, students will be $40.

The whole proposal can be found here.

Since this post has opened up the subject of dues, the ALA membership renewal letter that ALA mailed out recently indicates only the full membership rates for renewing divisions and round tables without indicating the existence of special rates for retired members, student members, and support staff among others. For example, SRRT would be $15 while I'm eligible for the $5 retired rate as a retired member. I was quoted the full rates even though I'm currently a member in SRRT and ACRL at the lower rates.

I consider this letter to be misleading and an unethical attempt to get certain membership classes to pay more than they need to.

Unfortunately, roundtable dues have been standardized. They were voted on in the spring and went into effect September 1st.

All non-student individual membership is now $15. Student membership is $5, but we have a coupon code (SRRTSTUDENT23) to waive the student dues at checkout.

Thank you for the update. ALA then needs to change the document that I found at the link below that gives very different information.

This page lists all membership dues for ALA, divisions and round tables

Oh, wow. That's an old page. I'll report it and see if we can get it updated or removed. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

    Hi Bob,
The dues structure hasn't been changed because it hasn't been approved by Council.

Well, I just received my renewal notice and the dues for each round table is $15. I'm actually happy to pay $15 to SRRT instead of the $5 for retired members. I did a separate donation several times because I thought the $5 was too low. I'm assuming this amount, $15, was approved by each round table governing board and would not require approval by ALA Council. I think only ALA general dues need to be approved by ALA Council.

I don't know about basic dues because I don't pay those having been in ALA the required number of years to get free basic dues after retirement.

We need to pay the dues fairly soon to be able to vote in the next election.

What is unfortunate is that online payment is not available at this time.

The online renewal link gave me the option to pay online by credit card or PayPal, so that issue seems to be resolved.

I fiddled and was able to renew online.

Yes, that's what Sherre said as well. The top of the renewal notice says it isn't working but it sounds like it's been fixed since the renewal letters were sent out. Guess I should try it instead of believing what I read.
