The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

    April,

This year, we joined la Universidad Abierta de Recoleta (UAR) in Chile to launch the International Diploma in Data Surveillance and Democracy. Since then, we've taken on the work of understanding– and challenging– the data economy's impact on our lives and communities.

Now, we're excited to introduce Course 3: Rebellion Against Technology in the Service of Surveillance. Registration is now open and our course begins on November 23, 2023!

In this course, we're going to take an in-depth look at the diverse strategies that have built a powerful worldwide movement against the constantly expanding global surveillance state. We'll examine the histories and policing systems that have dictated the development of particular surveillance technologies designed and controlled by big tech companies, and enabled by governmental authorities.

These technologies have led to serious human rights violations, trauma, and suffering for many groups, especially immigrants, the working class, and communities of color. All this has been done in the name of profit, with tech giants and governments benefiting financially through lucrative contracts and massive profits, while disregarding the harm to marginalized communities. This course aims to unpack the complex interplay between government interests, corporate motivations, emerging technologies, and their impacts on human lives and rights.

We'll also be joined by a roster of instructors, each bringing their unique perspective to these critical issues:

    • Ruth Wilson Gilmore:  a professor at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, co-founder of several organizations including the California Prison Moratorium Project and Critical Resistance, and author of books such as Golden Gulag and Abolition Geography.
    • Andrea J. Ritchie: a recognized expert on policing and criminalization, co-founder of Interrupting Criminalization, and author of Invisible No More: Police Violence Against Black Women and Women of Color.
    • Harsha Walia: a writer and organizer based in Vancouver and award-winning author of Border and Rule: Global Migration, Capitalism, and the Rise of Racist Nationalism.
    • Mizue Aizeki: the Executive Director and founder of the Surveillance Resistance Lab and co-editor of Resisting Borders and Technologies of Violence.
    • No Tech For Tyrants (NT4T): a UK-wide collective working to sever links between universities, violent technology companies, and hostile immigration environments.
    • AlgoRace: a multidisciplinary team addressing how AI systems reinforce inequality, discrimination, and racial criminalization.

Sign ups are open today and our course kicks off on Thursday, November 23rd!

OJO: Are you worried about missing the first two courses or their future availability? Rest assured, the complete Diploma, including all four courses, will be offered again next year. We suggest enrolling in courses 3 and 4 now and taking courses 1 and 2 next year!

    See you in class,

    April,

    • Andrea J. Ritchie: reconocida experta en policía y criminalización, cofundadora de Interrupting Criminalization y autora de "Invisible No More: Police Violence Against Black Women and Women of Color." ("Nunca Más Invisibles: Violencia Policial Contra las Mujeres Negras y de Color.")
    • Harsha Walia: escritora y organizadora residente en Vancouver y autora de "Border and Rule: Global Migration, Capitalism, and the Rise of Racist Nationalism."
