The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

Combating Voter Suppression: What Can Libraries Do?
Sep 12, 2024 01:00 PM Central Time (US and Canada)

With up to a quarter of the world's population voting, 2024 is being called "the super election year" and is expected to be the biggest election year in history. In the United States, in addition to the presidential election, citizens will be voting for 34 Senate seats, 435 Representative voting seats, 11 governors, 10 attorney generals, numerous state representatives, and more. Worldwide, it is estimated that up to 49% of eligible voters, or two billion people have already voted or will be voting in one of 64 national elections. Fair elections are threatened by misinformation, disinformation, and even threats of violence. In this turbulent environment, 2024 has the potential to shape the world for many years to come – both good and bad.

Join the ALA Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT) as we discuss ways for librarians and libraries to combat voter suppression in an age of rampant mis- and disinformation. Topics include voting & election toolkits, helping your patrons spot misinformation/disinformation, and promoting civic literacy through forums/educational discussions.

    The webinar will be recorded.
