Miriam Braverman Memorial Prize Essay Presentation: "Out of Bounds: Sexual Harassment from Patrons in the Public Library"
Sunday, June 25, 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
McCormick Place, W191
Please mark your calendars to attend the Braverman Prize Essay Presentation at ALA Annual in Chicago, where 2023 Braverman winner Maggie Grabmeier of the University of Wisconsin-Madison will present her winning essay "Out of Bounds: Sexual Harassment from Patrons in the Public Library".
The essay presents a compelling overview of a timely yet under-researched topic, the sexual harassment of library workers by library patrons, focusing in particular on those working in public libraries. After reviewing recent literature and providing a feminist critique, Grabmeier outlines specific steps that libraries can take to better respond to incidents of sexual harassment when they occur, along with policy and practices that might result in fewer incidents.
The Braverman Prize honors Miriam Ruth Gutman Braverman (1920-2002), who was a socialist, writer, activist librarian, longstanding member of the Progressive Librarians Guild (PLG), and a founder of ALA's Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT).
