The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

  • 1.  Searching for statistics on economic effects of municipal plastic bans

    Hello All,

I'm currently helping a local committee with a community hearing regarding a proposed plastics ban in a coastal community. Specifically, the task force is looking at the economic impacts of a plastic ban (bags, straws, Styrofoam) on individuals and businesses in the community, positive or negative. There are other task forces working on environmental and health impacts so that is not necessarily the concern of this group.

Would anyone know of any good resources that cut to the economic impacts of plastic bans. Any information on tourism, fisheries/oysteries, cost/benefits for consumers, and costs/benefits for businesses would be appreciated.

    Thank you in advance!

    Best,
    Craig

This data is a bit older (2013), but it might be beneficial. http://energycenter.org/sites/default/files/Plastic-Bag-Ban-Web-Version-10-22-13-CK.pdf The Equinox Project's Quality of Life Dashboard might also prove helpful. (Under the "waste" tab, there is information about policies related to banning of plastics.)  https://www.sandiego.edu/soles/hub-nonprofit/initiatives/dashboard/
