The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

Relative to our conversation at yesterday's SRRT meeting, I wanted to remind us all of Al Kagan's fine editorial in the Summer 2014 issue of Progressive Librarian, "Racism and 'Free Speech': Framing the Issues". And quoting the Black Caucus of the American Library Association's 1978 statement regarding this topic "Democracy does not require tolerance of ideas we detest."

"Democracy does not require tolerance of ideas we detest."  Always a sentiment worth remembering.

    Thanks, Sheree!
