SRRT (Social Responsibilities Round Table)

last person joined: 4 days ago

The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

Thanks for putting this list together. I made this list for SRRT for many years and it always seemed like people found it helpful.--

You might have been my inspiration! I was going through some older SRRT newsletters and came across a similar list and decided that was a good idea.

Thanks April. I just want to add a word of caution for some new voters. Some prominent ALA members join a long list of organizations only for narrow political purposes. I think you can see that in a least a couple of cases on the list. Further, the more folks you vote for, the more you dilute your vote. If there are folks that you know and are enthusiastic about them getting elected, your vote will count more if you vote for them and fewer candidates.

SRRT has been castigated for endorsing specific candidates on the list. I don’t agree with that policy, but If you want to support specific folks it would probably be better for SRRT to do so off the listserv. That said, I would appreciate such personal messages myself.
