The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

    Hey all,

Hope you are all well and thriving, all things considered.

Have you heard of the  #Scholar Strike that's being organised by Dr. Anthea Butler of UPenn and Kevin Gannon, director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Grand View University ?

If so, how are you or your institutions intending to participate?

If not, please read the Inside Higher Ed. article linked above.

This is a very carefully thought out action, in solidarity with all those suffering due to the ongoing violence against black people in this country. The co-organisers have taken into account many of the obstacles faced by academic professionals and scholars in speaking truth to power.

Imagining and working to build an equitable and more lovely world,

    Marian

Thank you  for posting this.  I will post the information on one SRRT Facebook page and in some other places.  I'm retired and never worked in academic libraries. I think this is a brilliant idea and wish I could do more to support it.

Fantastic! And congratulations on successful retirement!

I think spreading the word is one good way to show support. As an online student, I too felt hard pressed to know how to participate. But by spreading the word I'm connecting with like minded people and getting to see how different people are responding.

    Be well,
    Marian

Thanks for sharing this, Marian, I hadn't seen this posted elsewhere! I sent out a call to action on the faculty listserv for my campus and contacted staff who I think will spread it through their contact lists.
    Best wishes,
    Meg

That's fantastic Meg! And exactly what I've been encouraging others to do.  I also, learned of some resources that might be helpful to those who aren't certain about what the #ScholarStrike could look like.

There is this Anthea Butler video explaining the goals of the strike. And there is a compilation of resources here: #ScholarStrike YouTube channel, that may be useful even after the "official" strike days are over.

    All my best,

    Marian
