The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

    In case you aren't aware.

Behind the Bastards is a podcast where the journalist Robert Evans researches some of the worst people in history and then discusses his findings with a guest, usually a comedian. It's informative, funny, and occasionally upsetting (Evans' sense of humor is an acquired taste).

The latest episode, released 2/8 2022, deals with Melvil Dewey, who is pretty low on Evans' scale of terrible people (genocidal political leaders being common subjects), but who is plenty awful with racism, sexual harrassment, and antisemitism on full display. Still, it's a relatively quick and easy way to get a glimpse of the ugly side of someone who still tends to get treated favorably in library education.

Minor warning -- Evans' explanation of library processes is a little off, but that's not really the point of the podcast. Hope you find it somewhat useful.

Thanks so much for posting this, Peter! A faculty colleague told me about it this morning, and I was glad to hear that the SRRT Feminist Task Force's resolution to rename the ALA Dewey Award is mentioned!
