Some other SRRT history tidbits
EJ Josey( Black Caucus), Elizabeth Martinez Smith (Reforma), Virginia Matthews and Lotsee Patterson (American Indian Library Association) were early SRRT activists and subsequently founders of ALA affiliates and ethnic library organizations. All three started SRRT Task Forces ( Minority Concerns, Chicanos, American Indians) shortly after SRRT's founding).
In 1970 SRRT-ers founded the National Freedom Fund for Librarians to support librarians under fire for fighting censorship. NFFL preceded the Freedom to Read Foundation and the Leroi Merritt Humanitarian Fund.
Two SRRT-ers have served as ALA Treasurers ( me and Herb Biblo). Herb was the first minority and I was the first woman.
How do I remember these tidbits? Fifty years ago I was the first elected SRRT coordinator. So many years, so many fabulous, hard- working, committed library workers!
SRRT's influence as an incubator and support for activists and change-agents in ALA and the profession has been enormous.
