The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

  • 1.  Library Community Feedback Wanted: ALA Code of Ethics, 9th Principle

    Posted Mar 31, 2021 02:58 PM

    Hello,

ALA's Committee on Professional Ethics (COPE) is looking for feedback from the library community about an update to the ALA Code of Ethics. In July 2020, the COPE voted to establish a working group to explore the creation of a new principle of the ALA Code of Ethics to address racial and social justice. In collaboration with member groups of the Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services (ODLOS), a working group was created. The working group is co-chaired by Andrew Harant and Sheri Edwards and the members are Nicole Cooke, Alexandra Gomez, Sarah Houghton, Nancy Kirkpatrick, Liladhar Pendse, and Jennifer Shimada. This group has drafted a ninth principle for the ALA Code of Ethics that states our profession's responsibility to support and advance racial and social justice and its obligation to ensure equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Post feedback on this Google Doc: "Library Community Feedback Wanted: ALA Code of Ethics, 9th Principle" by Wednesday, April 14. COPE requests that you post comments or add suggestions, rather than edit the document directly. To post a comment, select "insert" in the top menu, and then click "Comment." Comments may be posted anonymously (if you're not signed in to a Google account) or publicly (if you're signed in to your Google account).

The Committee on Professional Ethics will revise the draft in light of your suggestions and plans to distribute the final proposed 9th principle to ALA Council prior to ALA Annual Conference. Please feel free to share this request for feedback with others in your librarian communities.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions, and please let me know if you have any questions,

    Stephen Matthews, Chair

    Committee on Professional Ethics (COPE)

Following up on Amber's message from last week, I encourage SRRT members to take a look at the draft from the COPE working group if you haven't already – MANY comments have been made – so many in fact that the document itself looks really tiny now in comparison!  Don't be intimidated - they should hear from many voices on this, and to reiterate, you can post anonymously if not signed into a Google account.

I remember the frustration that I sometimes felt as to the limitations of the scope of the CoE when I served on COPE a while back.  This new principle could/should expand and modernize it.
