  • 1.  Updated YCC Resolution: Resolution to Support School & Academic Library Chapters

    Posted May 14, 2024 06:49 AM
The Youth Council Caucus (YCC) has worked on rewriting the resolution that we started before LibLearnX and we want to bring it to council at Annual.  The whereas clauses are similar; however, the resolved clauses have been rewritten.
ALA and the Chapter Relations Office since December have increased services to all library-type chapters.  Also,  the Chapter Relations Committee has agreed to update a current recommended Chapter Councilor job description.  We tried to acknowledge this increased service in the resolution.
We have received and incorporated comments from AASL and ACRL.  We have also sent the resolution for comments to the Chapter Relations Committee (CRC), the Committee on Organization (COO) and BARC.
The purpose of bringing the resolution to the council is to raise awareness with the ALA governing body (ALA Council) about equity of services to all ALA members.  We tried to acknowledge the recent strides from ALA in improving this equity, but the group also felt that it was important for the governing body to 1) be aware of the recent increased services and 2) commit to maintaining these services.
We are interested in any comments, suggestions for updates, or questions about the revised resolution.
    Thank you very much,
    --Kathy Lester

I want to thank the YCC for their dedicated work on this resolution. I can tell there has been a lot of work put into this!

I made some suggested edits to your resolved clauses directly in the document. I did struggle to understand the "whereas" clauses as they are quite lengthy. Think they could benefit from being more concise. Shortening sentences and breaking down complex ideas into simpler terms will make this more readable and easier to understand. Consider writing this for Councilors who do not have deep knowledge of how AASL/ACRL and Chapter Relations work.

I want to support this resolution and it would be immensely helpful for it to have clear specifics on the issues at hand that the resolve clauses will address.

Please let me know if you'd like any assistance with tightening up the language. I'd be happy to help!

The YCC group working on this resolution wants to thank everyone for the comments.

We wanted to let all councilors know that the resolution

has once again been updated based on feedback from various groups.

From the time that I sent it to Council in May -- we have made the following changes.

There is some cleanup in the whereas clauses -- shortening, reorganizing, and clarifying.
And the resolved clauses have been totally rewritten.
Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.
    Thank you!

Great work! I like that you are recognizing the work that has been done, and then making a specific ask.

I may have gotten a little lost in the acronyms, but I am not sure I understand this whereas clause:

Whereas the Chapter Relations Committee (CRC) works with CRC to serve as an advisory committee to CRO as detailed at the referenced ALA Chapter Relations Committee webpage.

To me it says the CRC is working with itself. Is that what you meant? What am I missing?

Ah...the second CRC should probably be the Chapter Relations Office. Thanks for catching this!
