    Hello Councilors,
At last week's TAG session, it was mentioned that it would be helpful to see the TAG models with a column including the current structure. This is quite clearly a bare bones model (as are the recommended models). I hope you will find them helpful.

    Best,

Somehow I missed this when it was posted, but this gets at my question at Forum last night... the motions we are considering do not commit us to the details in this document, correct? All we would be approving with these motions is the concept of governance by a Board of Directors, exact composition to be determined ("as may be amended with the benefit of the ALA Council's input between now and the June 2022 Annual Conference"); informed by a Body of Knowledge,  which would either be a smaller council  or four assemblies, also exact composition to be determined ("as may be amended with the benefit of the ALA Council's input between now and the June 2022 Annual Conference").

Is that all correct? I can ask this on the floor this afternoon if that  would be better.

Thanks Nicholas, for putting this questions forward.  I'm eager to hear other opinions on this questions.  I believe if we vote yes on the TAG proposals we are committing to eliminating Council as the policy making and ultimate oversight body of  ALA.

Correct, but what I am trying to confirm is that we are not committing to how the new policy making body (Board of Directors) or the new body of knowledge (Council/Assemblies) are composed.

    Hi Nicholas,

If we vote yes to the third motion, we are definitely setting a direction and beginning the process, but not committing to the structure sent out by TAG.

    Thanks,

Nicholas, hello, and thank you for your thoughtful comments and questions last night during Forum.

Yes, I read the TAG motions the way you do. As you state, "All we would be approving with these motions is the concept of governance by a Board of Directors, exact composition to be determined ('as may be amended with the benefit of the ALA Council's input between now and the June 2022 Annual Conference'); informed by a Body of Knowledge, which would either be a smaller council  or four assemblies, also exact composition to be determined ('as may be amended with the benefit of the ALA Council's input between now and the June 2022 Annual Conference')."

Regarding posting to the Council Connect group, I can understand why you might ask if it's ok to post here, given that there is so little member-generated traffic these days. Council list discussions used to be much more robust (for those of us around in the mid-1990s, the conversation sometimes became TOO robust, but that's a memory for us old-timers to chaw over).

Speaking only as a personal Councilor and basing my comments on my own experience on Council these past 20+ years, I think those list conversations were often beneficial. First, they went to all Councilors (unlike Forum discussions, which are only heard by those present). Second, they whetted Council's appetite for floor discussions at Council. Third, some of the administrivia around resolutions was resolved in advance, leaving more time for actual deliberation.

My .02... see you at Council!
