ACRL-ANSS Review & Planning Committee--Minutes--Annual 2018

Jul 20, 2018 12:04 PM

ANSS Review & Planning Committee
Annual Meeting, June 23, 2018
New Orleans, Louisiana

Minutes

Present: Jill Conte, Susan Silver, Helen Clements

Absent: Miriam Rigby, Wayne Sanders

Corrections and additions from Jill Conte, Anne Larrivee.

Some of the items on the agenda were covered by other committees; our meeting was brief.

Items discussed:

  1. Donations for scholarship funds. Anne Larrivee. Current Chair, mentioned that we have approximately $895 remaining in our operating budget, before submission of reimbursement requests for the program at Annual, and possible copying costs for Hailey Mooney’s presentation at the American Sociological Association. The deadline for reimbursements and for donations to ACRL scholarships is mid-August.
  2. Donation of unused basic operating funds for scholarships. Jill Conte noted that we have discussed creating a named ANSS scholarship within ACRL.  This involve additional administrative costs.  Jill also consulted with EBSS.  They have decided to bypass the formal scholarship and simply give an award with a plaque or other form of acknowledgement.
Anne Larrivee suggested (on July 16) using a clock as a gift for award winners.  Helen Clements said that this was a good idea.  We could order several clocks from a vendor at one time.  A label with the name of the award and of ANSS could be added, without the necessity of having individual names on the label.  Further discussion and approval are needed.

Other remaining money could simply be donated to the ACRL general scholarship funds, as we have done in the past.

  1. Archiving ANSS documents. ALA Connect is the official site for ANSS documents; they are harvested there for retention of the records for ALA/ACRL. We discussed moving our documentation off of various platforms that have been used, such as Google discussion groups and liaisons to move their materials to Connect. We mentioned that it would be helpful to have a procedure (workflow) about how to manage the archiving.
  2. On July 3rd, Anne Larrivee forwarded a question from Publications “about collaborating with review and planning to design a better workflow for document storage, work flow processes, and perhaps creating an ANSS email”.  Further discussion and action will be needed.
  3. Given the current interest in data management and the emerging trends to create jobs dealing with data management, we mentioned reaching out to other Social Sciences sections in ACRL, as well as to interest and discussion groups. Some committee members mentioned specific people or groups that have formed. Some former members have moved on to positions with responsibilities in those areas; Jen Darragh, for example.
