Charge: ACRL’s Library EDI Committees Discussion Group seeks to provide a forum for practitioners, especially members of Library Diversity committees, to discuss EDI topics in academic libraries, and share resources useful to library workers engaged in EDI initiatives in libraries. They plan to work to support both library workers who are thinking about starting a diversity initiative and diversity committees that are already established.

    Hello all,

I am Brian Lym, the other co-convenor of this Discussion Group.   I am the Director for Employee Engagement, Development, and Belonging at the University of Oregon and I have core responsibility for advancing a culture which values and prioritizes equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility across UO Libraries.   I serve on the Libraries Leadership Team, and am ex-officio to the Library Diversity Committee.  Notably,  the Library Diversity Committee began nearly 30 years ago as the Library Diversity Task Force, but my position is entirely new to the Libraries.   I am also a library faculty member appointed at the rank of Senior Librarian.

Beyond the  UO Libraries, I am part of a University-wide Equity and Inclusion Community of Practice.   Being a member of this group has been really supportive for the work I am doing--the work of advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion is a collaborative effort across the university, and I am grateful to have a "dotted line" connection to the Division of Equity and Inclusion which sponsors the Community of Practice.

My commitment to EDI work began years ago in prior academic library leadership positions, and was especially strengthened when I worked with Corliss Lee as a co-lead editor Implementing Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: A Handbook for Academic Libraries, published by ACRL in 2022.

I look forward to learning about others' work on Library EDI committees--your current challenges and opportunities.

    Best

    Brian
