We are excited to announce that Geraldine Rivera has been selected to be our 2025 Artist in Residency!
Geraldine Rivera (b. 1992, Dominican Republic) is a multimedia artist, performer, and visual storyteller. Geraldine crafts visceral narratives through video, installation, and experimental performance, centering a Caribbean femme gaze on the complexities of intimacy, healing, and desire. Their work-a tapestry of research, movement, and communal dialogue-interrogates the politics of relationships and the body, oscillating between vulnerability and defiance.
A recipient of the Second Place award at the Dominican Republic's Biennial (2023, Centro de la Imagen) and an International Aid awardee by Catapult Arts (2021), Rivera's practice has resonated in spaces like Centro de la Imagen (Mexico City, 2024), Mutek Barcelona (2022), and residencies at Miami's Edge Zones Art Center (2022) and the Dominican Republic's Buena Suerte Art Club (2023).
Rooted in Visual Communications (Farmingdale State College) and Sociology, Rivera's work thrives in the liminal, where personal excavation meets collective catharsis.
Artist Statement
I approach art as a fluid process, one where the final form is not predetermined but emerges organically from deep inquiry. An Instagram story, a mind map, a performance, a workshop, or even a class can all become vessels for artistic expression, so long as they externalize the core of my research in ways that resonate with others.
I am less interested in rigid conclusions than I am in the act of uncovering. My work thrives in the in-between spaces-between theory and sensation, between personal excavation and collective catharsis. Whether through video, installation, performance, or participatory encounters, I seek to translate complex social and emotional landscapes into accessible, provocative experiences.
Art, for me, is not just about making objects-it's about creating entry points for dialogue, reflection, and transformation. By embracing open-ended forms, I invite audiences to engage not just with what I've discovered, but with the process of discovery itself.
