    Dear colleagues and friends,

The FASPE 2024 call is out, please find more information on the program that takes young professionals to Holocaust sites in Germany and Europe to learn about how professionals enabled Nazi policies and to discuss ethical leadership in their own profession.

I've co-developed the Design and Technology curriculum with my UCSD colleague David Danks, and we've also taught it for the first time in 2022. In 2023, the Design and Technology program was taught by Mary Gray (MSR) and Tawanna Dillahunt (UMich).

The program is an incredible learning opportunity for fellows and educators alike, and I highly recommend it. In addition to important learning outside the classroom, fellows typically form bonds for life.

Please circulate this call in your networks. If you know any young professionals in design and technology professions (incl. architecture, product design, computer science, data science, etc.) who'd be interested in the program, please encourage them to apply. This includes graduate students.

Other FASPE programs focus on journalism, the medical profession, lawyers, clergy, and business, and the deadline for those programs is the same.

Fellows are fully funded for the program. More information can be found below.

If you have questions about FASPE, please email Rebecca Scott: rscott@faspe-ethics.org

Thank you, and all my best,
    Mona

Summer Ethical Leadership Fellowship for Graduate Students and Early-Career  Professionals in Design, Technology, Architecture, Computer/Data Science and Related Fields

FASPE (Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics) is now accepting applications for its 2024 Design & Technology program.

FASPE Design & Technology is a fully-funded, two-week fellowship program in professional ethics and ethical leadership that begins by examining the actions and choices of German designers and technologists in enabling Nazi policies. It then draws on this historical example to help Design & Technology Fellows both grapple with their role and responsibility as designers of built environments and encourages them to identify and confront the ethical issues currently facing architects, engineers, designers, and other technologists today. The program takes place in Germany and Poland at sites of historical significance, allowing Fellows to benefit from immersive, contextual learning.

    DETAILS

Program Dates: Friday, May 24 - Friday, June 7, 2024.

Fully-funded: All program costs are covered, including travel, lodging, and food.

Interdisciplinary: FASPE Design & Technology Fellows travel and share some seminars with Fellows in the FASPE Business and Law programs.

Itinerary: Fellows will travel to Berlin, Krakow, and Oswiecim (the location of the former Nazi extermination camp of Auschwitz).

Eligibility: FASPE Design and Technology applicants must be actively pursuing a career in architecture, design, computer science, data science, engineering, or any related professions. Applicants must fit into one of the following two categories: 1) be enrolled in a graduate program in design, architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, computer science, statistics and applied math, electrical engineering, or a program in a closely related field at the time of their application, or 2) be working in a related field, with an undergraduate degree earned no earlier than May 2019 or a graduate degree no earlier than May 2021.

FASPE seeks Fellows who are interested in engaging in discussions with their co-Fellows and faculty, and who have the intellectual and emotional maturity to unpack difficult and controversial issues responsibly and respectfully in small group settings. FASPE selects its Fellows on the basis of their academic background, personal and professional experiences, capacity for leadership and ability to contribute to the program and the alumni community. All applications are welcome and reviewed.

FASPE programs are non-denominational. Candidates of all nationalities, religions, and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
