    Posted 21 days ago

    Hi Health Sciences Interest Group,

I have some questions as I am looking more carefully into medical librarian career.

     List of questions are:

    • May you link articles/books/readings to read about the fundamentals of being a medical librarian?
    • What are some lessons learned in early career of being a medical librarian?
    • What specific skills and knowledge are demanded for an entry level medical librarian job?
    • What does professional development consist of as a medical librarian?
    • What are some common medical databases and journals that people interested in medical library field should be aware of?

    Hi Bryan,

The Midcontinental Chapter of the Medical Library Association is working on a guide to resources for early-career health sciences librarians. It should be out in a few weeks. In the meantime, you might want to take a look through the MLA website to see what you can find.

My apologies to ALA for plugging a different library organization!

    Hello Bryan and others,
Apologies if this has already been said, but Bryan, you'll find the answers to most of your questions on the Medical Library Association website (https://www.mlanet.org/).
MLA offers reduced membership fees for students, unemployed librarians, and first-time members. If you join MLA, you can request a mentor, who can help you with career trajectories, getting involved within the professional org, etc.

If you're located in the United States, I would also encourage you to connect with your region's NNLM office. They offer tons of free professional development and some regions work with library schools to provide opportunities especially for library school students.

    Take care,
    Dawn
