    Dear all,

For an upcoming University Libraries Section webinar,  Kate Peterson and I are discussing the Univ. of Minnesota Libraries programming for a summer workhop for newly admitted graduate students who are primarily from underrepresented groups.  We realize we are likely not alone im such endeavors and would like to note what other libraries are doing in our presentation.

We're looking for information about any library programming for graduate students who are primarily students of color, from other marginalized groups, or are first-generation students. The programming can happen at any time during the graduate students' careers.  We just need a basic description, URL of a webpage/guide (if that exists), and contact info.

You are all invited to the ULS webinar too:  Library Programming for a Summer Institute for New Graduate Students from Underrepresented Groups on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, from 1:00pm - 2:00pm (central).  The description of the webinar follows:

This talk will discuss the University of Minnesota Libraries' programming for the University of Minnesota Graduate School Diversity Office's Summer Institute (SI) which began in 2018 as a seven-week summer bridge program for newly admitted graduate students who are primarily students of color or are from other underrepresented groups. During the SI, participants attend seminars focusing on how to successfully acclimate to graduate school, receive an overview of various university services, as well as meet with peer mentors who are former SI participants. Working closely with a faculty mentor, each participant engages in a new research project culminating in a presentation at the end of the seven weeks. The goal of the research is not to complete an entire research project, but rather gain experience conducting research and writing that they will do in their graduate programs.

In this talk, Kate Peterson and Brian Vetruba, the two librarians who organized and coordinated the Libraries' efforts in the SI, will provide an overview on how the Libraries' participation has evolved. They'll also share feedback from participants, the Graduate School, and librarians involved as well as thoughts on moving forward. Finally, they'll offer tips for other librarians who wish to do something similar at their own institutions.

Kate Peterson is the Undergraduate Services Librarian and Brian Vetruba is the European Studies and Digital Scholarship Librarian at the University of Minnesota.
