Librarianship in For-Profit Educational Institutions Discussion Group

I would love to hear opinions on TinyCat and LibraryThing. I'd be interested in other low cost ILS too.

Currently we use Horizon and are down to less than 100,000 item records for physical items. We've been aggressively weeding and purchasing electronic copies over the past 5 years. We're working towards a 100% online library for our students, but will likely make it to 99%. I anticipate keeping <5,000 books at one campus location, hence the 99%.

If you don't have experience in TinyCat or low cost options - but have experience with ILS management and migrations - I'd love to hear your "keep this mind..." comments!

I have used LibraryThing for my personal library collection for years. I was not aware of TinyCat; thank you for mentioning it. One question that came to mind: how do you incorporate your database subscriptions and article-level discovery into TinyCat?

Now that you mention it, I'm not sure of a way to add databases, let alone article-level! Our library is moving toward a 100% online-first model, so this is not a deal breaker for us. I can certainly see how this would stop others. Our current ILS is Horizon and while we can link to e-resources, we don't.

Greetings Mary:
Our library uses LibraryThing for Libraries/ TinyCat as our library management system. Our library houses a collection that is small (in comparison to most) and specialized, almost a blend of both an academic and special library. Our collection contains less than 3000 resources in varying formats (print, digital, etc.) 

While I don't use TinyCat to facilitate article-level content access, I do use the home page as an access point for students to discover/ log into our online databases. Feel free to view/ share our online catalog  for examples of how I leverage some of their features. Happy to answer any questions as well. I hope this information helps!
