  • 1.  open scholarship and research impact?

Hi all: does anyone know of any research or other information on the effect of open scholarship/open science on research impact?

We're running a workshop for our faculty later in October on the components of open scholarship, and I'm taking on the research  metrics/impact side of things-looking to see what might be out there on the pros and cons of all things open (OA publishing, data, etc) when it comes to the impact of research (and how it's measured).

    Thanks for any ideas!

    Jim

    Hi Jim,

If you're defining research impact in the narrow and traditional way of citations, there is a recent paper out that has a good review of the various studies looking at citation rates of OA vs. non-OA articles. As with most things in this area, the answer is really, "it depends," especially on discipline.
Langham-Putrow, A., Bakker, C., & Riegelman, A. (2021). Is the open access citation advantage real? A systematic review of the citation of open access and subscription-based articles. PLOS ONE, 16(6), e0253129. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0253129
    Thanks,
    Eric
