    About this event

What are the personal and organizational roadblocks to preparing for earthquakes and other disasters, and how do we get over them? How do we determine and increase our capacity for handling problems? This moderated conversation between geophysicist Lucy Jones and organizational psychologist Jay Finkelman will help us move towards the preparedness we all know is necessary. Attendees will gain a greater understanding of the effects of earthquakes and other disasters, how to prepare, and why we don't prepare.

Dr. Lucy Jones is the founder and Chief Scientist of the Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society, with a mission to foster the understanding and application of scientific information in the creation of more resilient communities, and a Research Associate at the Seismological Laboratory of Caltech. With a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Language and Literature from Brown University and a Ph.D. in Geophysics from MIT, Dr. Jones has been active in earthquake research for decades, furthering earthquake risk reduction, including 33 years of federal service with the US Geological Survey. Since completing her federal service, Dr. Jones has also pursued other interests, including authoring The Big Ones: How Natural Disasters Have Shaped Us (and what we can do about them). Published by Doubleday in 2018.

Dr. Jay Finkelman is an I/O Business Psychology professor at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology with many years in both the academic and organizational worlds. Dr. Finkelman is an Industrial and Forensic Psychologist as well as a Certified Professional Ergonomist. He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from New York University, an M.B.A. in Industrial Psychology from the Bernard M. Baruch School of Business of The City College of The City University of New York (CUNY), and a Master of Legal Studies (M.L.S.) from The Santa Barbara and Ventura Colleges of Law.
