    Hi colleagues,

    I wanted to make you aware of the next offering of the Library Juice Academy (LJA) course, "Know Your User: Research Methods Beyond Usability Testing."  This is an "all levels" class, good for those who are new to doing UX research but also useful for those who have been doing UX research for some time and are looking for new ideas or would like to set aside a few weeks to develop a new study or two.  There will be plenty of options for course assignments – I realize that not everyone is able to conduct in-person studies right now. 

    Feel free to get in touch if you have questions about the course, and please do pass this along to others who might be interested in learning about (and possibly conducting!) user interviews, observational studies, A-B tests, and card sorting activities.

    Know your user: Research methods beyond usability testing

    About the course: This four-week course will cover a selection of user research methods, including user interviews, observational studies, card sorting and A/B testing, that can be used to answer questions not typically answered through usability testing. In this course, you will learn the strengths and limitations of each type of study, the kinds of questions each can answer, and how to design these types of studies. You will consider good practices when interviewing and how to design and collect information through observational studies, card sorting activities, and A/B tests. We will also consider how best to follow up on what you learn through your studies in order to improve online interfaces or services.

    About the instructor: Emily Daly is Head of Assessment & User Experience at Duke University Libraries in Durham, NC. She coordinates Duke Libraries' Assessment Team and plans and conducts user research related to the Libraries' website, as well as library services, collections and spaces. She primarily uses qualitative research methods in her work. Emily also provides support for the Libraries' Digital Preservation and Publishing Program and helps coordinate the Libraries' web interfaces teams.

    About LJA: LJA courses use an online course management system, Moodle, an easy-to-use open source platform with few technical requirements beyond an internet connection and standard browser interface. Courses are taught asynchronously (meaning that you don't have to be online at any particular time), and involve reading assignments, offline activities, and class participation. There is a strong emphasis is on interaction between the students and the instructors.

    A four-week course involves about fifteen hours of work (3.75 hours per week). Instructors are knowledgeable professionals actively engaged in the learning process and are there to support you.
