    Washington and Lee University Library welcomes applications for the position of Research and Instruction Librarian.

    The successful candidate will have a strong and demonstrated understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially as applied to research and instruction services in academic libraries. The Research and Instruction Librarian will be a non-tenure track faculty member at the Assistant Professor rank. The appointment begins on or after June 1, 2022.

    Essential and Related Functions:

    • Provides reference assistance and expert research advice for students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community visitors.
    • Provides effective information literacy instruction in partnership with faculty colleagues in the College, the Williams School, and the library.
      • Delivers workshop sessions, classroom presentations, and alternate learning opportunities such as consultations, online tutorials, and other just-in-time methods.
      • Produces and maintains instructional materials in print and online.
      • Assists in evaluating the impact of instruction efforts.
    • Facilitates communication between the library and students and faculty within assigned disciplines or units.
    • Keeps current with trends and best practices in information literacy, pedagogy, and research methods and tools.
    • Collaborates with colleagues across the library to recommend selection and deselection of research and teaching resources for the library's collection.
    • Serves as a faculty member of the College.
      • Participates in teaching activities of the library, which may include advising students and/or teaching credit bearing courses in DCI, among other opportunities.
      • Engages in pertinent ongoing service, research, scholarship, and/or creative activity as defined by the library's Departmental Faculty Development Document.
      • Participates in professional development activities as appropriate to meet personal and departmental goals and objectives.
    • Performs other duties as assigned by the University Librarian or Head of Research Services.

    Salary and Benefits

    Minimum salary: $55,000 per year. Salary is commensurate with experience.

    Qualifications

    1. ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent relevant terminal degree. Holding a terminal degree in a relevant field is a requirement of faculty status.
    2. A combination of experience and training in information literacy pedagogy, coupled with a passion for teaching undergraduates through guest lectures, credit-bearing courses, asynchronous materials, and/or mentoring.
    3. A combination of experience and training in providing research support to students, staff, faculty, and the general public. A background in research services for the humanities or social sciences is preferred.
    4. Commitment to applying principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion to research and instruction services in academic libraries.

    The university requires employees to become fully vaccinated for COVID-19. New employees must provide proof of at least their first shot prior to the first day of employment. Boosters are required. Individuals may seek a medical or a religious exemption to the vaccination requirement.
