The COVID-19 pandemic forced students into a new, unexpected educational reality when courses shifted online in March 2020. Teaching librarians and faculty responded to this crisis by altering instructional content and expectations to reflect students' new circumstances. Even after the current public health crisis subsides, students will continue to face unseen obstacles that may impede their time, attention, and in turn, academic performance. Compassionate teaching strategies help level the playing field for students who encounter significant challenges by providing the support and accommodations needed to create an equitable experience. This presentation will explore compassionate pedagogy in higher education, with an emphasis on emergency remote teaching during the pandemic. It will offer recommendations for incorporating compassionate approaches into information literacy instruction sessions.

Time for Q&A will follow the presentation.
