  • 1.  Invitation to Participate in Research on Assessing Digital Library Accessibility and Usability Guidelines

    Posted Apr 09, 2025 02:35 PM

    Dear all,

My name is Hyun Seung Lee, and I am a PhD candidate at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I am reaching out to invite the community members to participate in a research study on assessing and improving the accessibility and usability of digital libraries for blind and visually impaired users in mobile environments.

People chosen as study participants will be invited to complete an electronic survey soliciting input and feedback on these design guidelines. Participation may take between two to four hours at a time convenient to the participant. Participants will first be asked to review the guidelines and then rate the guidelines based on various criteria, in addition to providing feedback and recommendations for improvement. Upon completion of the study, each participant will receive a $100 gift card as a token of appreciation.

For more information about the survey, the flyer regarding this study is attached to this discussion.

We are looking for two groups of participants.

    1) If you are interested in participating and you are:

    • A digital library (DL) developer who has been in charge of DL development for at least three years
    • Or involved in different aspects of DL development and management who have worked on DLs for at least three years

please complete the DL developer screening questionnaire and consent form.

    2) If you are interested in participating and you are:

    • a scholar who has conducted research on accessibility, usability, and/or utility of information systems or digital libraries for at least three years
    • Or an expert who has conducted accessibility or usability tests to support the needs of blind and visually impaired users for at least three years?

Please complete the scholar and expert screening questionnaire and consent form.

Should you have any questions, feel free to contact me at lee649@uwm.edu. When reaching out, please reference the project title:
"Assessment of the Mobile Digital Library Accessibility and Usability Guidelines (mDLAUG)" (IRB#: 25.128) in the subject line.

    Thank you.

    Thank you for your interest.

    Sincerely,

    Hyun Seung Lee

    Hello Hyun Seung,

It seems that the survey links are not active currently. Could you check to make sure they're published? I have some colleagues I'd like to share this with!

    Thank you,

    Michelle

    Hello Michelle,

Thank you so much for your interest.
Unfortunately, our IMLS-funded project "Assessment of the Mobile Digital Library Accessibility and Usability Guidelines" has been officially terminated as of last week. This means we will not be able to continue the planned study moving forward.
We sincerely apologize for the sudden nature of this notification. I was unable to remove the original post from the discussion in time and apologize for any confusion it may have caused.
We are truly grateful for your initial interest and support for the project.
Thank you again for your understanding.
    Sincerely,

    Hyun Seung Lee

I am so sorry to hear about the termination of your grant. This is important work, and I hope you are able to continue it in the future! The work you and your team have already done to develop the Mobile Digital Library Accessibility and Usability Guidelines (mDLAUG) is admirable, and I've shared it with my colleagues who work with our digital library (UW Digital Collections--you might already be familiar with them, since they serve the whole UW System).

    Best wishes,

    Michelle
