Charge: The Virtual Worlds Interest Group provides an opportunity for academic librarians with virtual environment interests and responsibilities to have a place in ACRL to network, share information, ask questions, and work on special projects, promote accessibility and provide programs relevant to academic libraries. The VW Interest Group also works to promote the various uses of virtual reality in all formats (desktop, mobile and headset) to potential and current academic librarians and to improve information literacy (metaliteracy) specifically in virtual spaces. The ACRL VWIG sponsors events, programs and meetings held mainly within the virtual world of Second Life and explores other developing Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality platforms in the evolving metaverse.

    An International Information Literacy Panel was held in the virtual world of Second Life on Sunday, Oct. 21.  Panelists were from the UK, Poland, Chile, Greece, and the USA.  Discussion on the challenges we face as librarians (on a global scale) validated the changing nomenclature, issues of digital citizenship, and the impact of the exponential growth of technology on our libraries and our roles as librarians and information literacy specialists.

    This panel was jointly sponsored by the ACRL Virtual World Interest Group and the Center for Information Literacy Research which is based in the UK.
    At the Nov. 18th meeting of the ACRL VWIG, a research study on "Factors Contributing to the Adoption of Virtual Worlds by Librarians" will be presented at 12 noon Pacific Time.  This topic will be shared at the Community Virtual Library in Second Life.
