    Presentation Abstract

Understanding and appreciating cultural diversity is an important component of librarianship as it enables librarians to effectively serve diverse communities, foster inclusivity, and ensure equitable access to information resources and services for all, regardless of background or cultural identity. This presentation offers a compelling narrative of a librarian and associate professor of information studies, who, as a Fulbright Scholar, embarked on a journey to investigate information literacy policy in both the United States and Finland.
Through a blend of comparative analysis and personal encounters, this session sheds light on the striking differences and intriguing parallels between these contrasting cultural landscapes. Spanning from institutional frameworks to societal attitudes, participants will gain insights into the interplay between information literacy and cultural contexts. Focused through the lens of Finland, a country celebrated for its progressive educational ethos and inclusive practices, the presentation provides tangible strategies for fostering cultural sensitivity and diversity within American librarianship. Join us for a global exploration of cultural diversity in librarianship, enriched with compelling narratives and actionable insights derived from the Finnish experience.
