Since 2021, the Roux Library Technical Services Department at Florida Southern College has partnered with San José State University's (SJSU) iSchool to provide a virtual Digital Scholarship Internship to students enrolled in the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) graduate program. Under the supervision of the Metadata Librarian, the Digital Scholarship interns gained experience in the skills of digital scholarship, specifically as it relates to supporting faculty and students in using digital tools to organize, share, and publish their research. During their internship, the interns produced metadata records for the Institutional Repository, and explored the capabilities of digital humanities tools such as ArcGIS StoryMaps, Timeline JS, and Omeka. The graduate interns also developed LibGuides covering scholarly communications, created training materials and workflows, and learned new tools applicable in Technical Services.

This presentation by current and former graduate students and their supervisor will focus on the internship experience, including how students in MLIS programs can augment their studies by participating in virtual internships to explore career options, learn new technical skills, and make professional connections. Our hope is that more institutions provide internship opportunities to graduate students who are exploring career options, want to gain valuable new skills, and are interested in expanding professional connections.
