You are invited to the discussion group at ALA Annual hosted by the ACRL Academic Library Services to International Students Interest Group!

    Date: Saturday, June 27th, 2015

    Time: 3pm – 4pm

Location: Hilton San Francisco Union, Union Square 19 & 20

Discussion Topic: How can we best support our international students? We want to get together to have conversations about and share effective methods and activities for supporting international students.

We have two exciting speakers for our session:

    • Laurie Bridges, Instruction and Emerging Technologies Librarian – Oregon State University

      • Approximately five years ago at Oregon State University a small team within the library created an interactive presentation, using the “Cephalonian Method,” to introduce and orient incoming freshmen to library services. Laurie Bridges, the librarian assigned to serve English Language Learning (ELL) students, now uses the presentation with all incoming international students in the university’s Academic English class, American Survival. Laurie will describe the Cephalonian Method and how she uses it for incoming ELL students.

    • Leila Rod-Welch, Outreach Services Librarian – University of Northern Iowa

      • As an Outreach Services Librarian, Leila will share numerous approaches taken to build a        successful program with her campus English as a Second Language (ESL) and International  Services Departments. Success stories and initiatives will be shared.

Each speaker will have about 15 minutes to present including Q & A. We’ll take a few minutes at the beginning of the meeting to introduce ourselves and we should have about 20 minutes at the end of the session for general discussion.

Questions? Feel free to email either (or both) of the conveners of the Interest Group:

    Arianne Hartsell-Gundy (arianne.hartsell.gundy@duke.edu)

    Qing Meade (qmeade@ewu.edu)

    Hope you can join us!
