  • 1.  CFP: Navigating Disability in the Academic Library Workplace

    Posted Jun 05, 2023 10:50 AM

We are seeking chapters for an upcoming ACRL publication, Navigating Disability in the Academic Library Workplace. The goal for this publication is to explore disability not from a patron or user point of view, but from the people who work in academic libraries. Recognizing that there are a large number of academic librarians working with disabilities, this volume will center chapters that invite readers to consider how to support and encourage the success of librarians in the workplace. For the purposes of this book the editors define disability as a long-term, physical, mental, or neurological impairment that, "in interaction with various attitudinal and environmental barriers, hinders...full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others" (Adapted from United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Article I).

This book will not only provide a guide for library workers with disabilities to better understand themselves and how they can support themselves in the workplace but provide a resource for able-bodied managers and librarians to utilize as a resource. This publication will be divided into four sections: philosophy/theory, case studies of employees, case studies of library leadership, and best practices regarding our work in libraries. We will prioritize submissions from individuals with disabilities and encourage perspectives from individuals with disabilities and intersectional identities, including new or unpublished voices.

Individual chapters within this book will undergo an open non-anonymous peer review process with fellow book chapter authors and an editorial review process before being submitted to ACRL. All chapters will follow APA 7th style guidelines.

Editors: Paula Martin, Assistant Dean of User Services and Samantha Peter, Chair of Research & Instruction and Instructional Design Librarian at the University of Wyoming Libraries. Please contact the editors if you have any questions at scook13@uwyo.edu or Paula.Martin@uwyo.edu. We are also happy to provide an alternate submission format

We will accept submissions until June 30. The timeline, example chapter titles, and instructions for submitting proposals are at the link below.

    Hi Paula,

My name is Hillary Pearson, and I'm the Program Manager of Accessibility Services for ALA's Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach (ODLOS). Thanks for sharing this! Is it OK if I share with RUSA's Accessibility Assembly and a few other interest groups in ODLOS that are focused on disability inclusion? These groups have a lot of folks working in the library field who have disabilities.

I would also encourage your team to reframe the language of "able-bodied managers" to be "managers without disabilities" or "non-disabled managers". The use of able-bodied has become outdated language in the disability community and implies (although I know this is not the intent!) that disabled bodies and "less abled" to do things.

    Best,

    Hillary
