CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: Black Men in LIS (Spring 2022)

  • 1.  CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: Black Men in LIS (Spring 2022)

    Posted Jan 19, 2022 11:24 AM

I am conducting a voluntary research study on the professional motivations of black men currently pursuing a master's-level degree in the Library and Information Science(s) from an ALA-accredited program. All study materials have been approved by Clemson University's Institutional Review Board (IRB).

Participants will complete an online survey (10-15 minutes) about the factors that influenced (1) their decision to obtain a degree in Library and Information Sciences (MLIS,MLS,MIS, etc.) and (2) their preferred professional environment (library, K-12, nonprofit, etc.) and professional practice area (cataloguing/metadata, data management and analytics, administration). If necessary, participants will be asked to engage in a 10-15 minute one-on-one interview with the researcher to further contextualize their survey responses. Participation is confidential. All responses will be anonymized in any subsequent publications and presentations.

To be eligible, participants must be black men currently pursuing a master's level degree in Library and/or Information Science(s)(MLS, MIS,MLIS) from an ALA accredited program. For the purpose of this study, "black" is defined as "a person having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa." Participants of black-inclusive mixed race are also welcomed to participate (Afro-Latinx, Afro-Caribbean, Biracial, etc.). This definition is borrowed from the US Census Bureau. Use the following link for more information on how the organization defines "race": About Race (census.gov)

Consult the following consent form for more details: https://bit.ly/3AI4YH9

The survey can be completed at the following link: https://bit.ly/BMLIS21 (Survey closes on April 1, 2022)
