To provide a forum for fellow PPIRS librarians to share their experiences and ideas about how AI technologies affect their professional work. This group discussion will focus on recent advances in free and subscription generative AI tools that are actively in use by students, faculty, and staff in higher education. As these tools and their underlying technologies are advancing quickly, it is helpful to have an ongoing conversation with our peers to compare best practices and discoveries.
You can post to the list by sending an email to ALA-ACRL-PPIRS-AIL-DG@ConnectedCommunity.org or by creating a new discussion post directly in the Connect community.

AI surveillance in libraries

  • 1.  AI surveillance in libraries

Hello, I'm a librarian at a community college that has started deploying cameras capable of watching and listening everything for the creation of a searchable database. These, to be specific. They are placing multiple cameras inside the library, including right behind the circulation desk. These are obviously in violation of Section VII of the ALA's Bill of Rights. I plan on bringing this to the attention of our department of academic affairs. Does anyone have any experience pushing back against this type of overreach?
