  • 1.  Accessibility checking of LibGuides

    Posted Jan 11, 2021 04:11 PM
    Hello all

GODORT has tasked me with doing an accessibility check of three LibGuides on cataloging government documents, I have two issues that I could get help / advice on ...

1 - having to check page by page since the only checker I have access to is WAVE. Is there any way to batch accessibility check LibGuides with multiple pages ??

2 - Is there a "Best Practices" for creating accessible LibGuide content ??

Research and contacting springshare on the issue found that the blank LibGuide is ADA compliant ... and then it's up to person adding the content to make sure the LibGuide remains ADA complaint ...

Thank you for any help in advance

    Simon

    Dear Simon,

NYU Libraries is in the midst of accessibility remediation of its LibGuides and the User Experience department, leading the project, has put together this A11y Overview Guide for its system.  In some ways it's unique to NYU, but in many ways it is applicable to guides generally.  It's not a "Best Practices" document endorsed by Springshare, but it's what we've been using to educate all content creators about what needs to be accessible in guides and how to comply.

Arc Toolkit for the Chrome browser is another useful checker, but I don't have a suggestion for a checker that processes multiple pages at once.  To be honest, at NYU we are still doing our manual checks, in coordination with the automated checker tools, on the Guides that were updated over the summer to ensure accessibility compliance.  It is definitely a lengthy process, but in my opinion worth the effort.

    Kind regards,
    Lauren

    Hello,

I am a disabled women who knows that being ADA compliant is only half of the battle. You have to actually consult those with disabilities to really make something accessible for all.  Hearing the voices of those you are trying to grant access for is essential in these processes.

    thank you
