Midwinter Discussion - January 31

Join the ANSS Sociology Librarians Discussion Group for a Midwinter conversation about academic library and sociology librarians' relationship with disciplinary organizations.

This past November, sociologist and director of SocArXiv Philip Cohen published a blog post entitled "Why I'm leaving the American Sociological Association." In the post, he cites several factors for his decision, including ASA's cost, inequity, opposition to open access and open science, and lack of willingness/ability to change. Looking at the current state of scholarly societies such as ASA, what impact does this have on us as sociology librarians? Do researchers on your campus maintain affiliations with national scholarly societies? Do you see any changes in relationships between scholars and disciplinary societies? Or a move to newer organizations? How closely should we as librarians be monitoring things happening with disciplinary societies? Do we have a role to play in any of these changes?

This meeting will not be recorded, but notes will be shared to our ALA Connect space after the meeting. Questions can be directed to Jessica Hagman ( or Stephanie Crowe (
