ACRL Government Relations Committee

  • 1.  ACRL Leg. Advocates Poster Session

    Marilyn and Others,

Those of you who attended the ACRL Government Relations Committee meeting at the ALA conference in Washington on June 27 will recall that someone (Marilyn?  Jonathan? Kara?) made a suggestion to have a poster session at next year's ACRL conference in Philadelphia concerning the Legislative Advocates program as a way of publicizing the program and, ideally, as a way to recruit more members.

Just wanted to let you know that earlier today (July 7), I submitted a poster session proposal form.  According to the online information, notification of acceptance or rejection is to be made in January 2011.  So, here's hoping for the best.  I'll let you all know how things stand once I hear back from the selection committee.

    Marilyn (and Others),

Was away from e-mail July 17-28, hence this late reply.  (Please Note:  I will be away from e-mail again August 3-10).  I will cut-and-paste below the ACRL poster session confirmation e-mail message I received.  It includes my own application.

ACRL Legislative Advocates: What? Why? How?

WHAT IS YOUR PROGRAM TITLE? ACRL Legislative Advocates: What? Why? How?
PLEASE SELECT THE PROGRAM TRACK Diversify our Interdependence: Building Relationships
Please provide a short program description What: ACRL Legislative Advocacy program helps diversify our interdependence by building relationships with federal legislators and campus allies via advocacy on behalf of academic libraries.
Why: shrinking library budgets and competition for resources.
How: become familiar with major legislation and policy; contacting members of Congress; develop relationships with others on campus.
Will provide information on how to apply and answer questions based on firsthand experience.
PLEASE PROVIDE A FULL PROGRAM DESCRIPTION In an era of shrinking library budgets and competition for resources, legislative advocacy on behalf of academic libraries is needed to help ensure favorable federal legislation and policy. The ACRL Legislative Advocates program was established in 2008 to recruit ACRL members willing and interested in advocating to members of Congress. Currently, there are approximately 50 Legislative Advocates; the goal is to have over 600 so that every Congressional district is covered.
The poster session will explain a) what the ACRL Legislative Advocates program is, b) the need for it; and c) how interested ACRL members can join.
In addition to graphics, I plan to engage the audience with both a brief explication and with answers to questions they may pose. As both a member of the ACRL Government Relations Committee and a Legislative Advocate, I am able to provide first-hand observations and information. Serving as a Legislative Advocate helps build relationships between libraries and legislators.
Information about the program is available online but I (and the Government Relations Committee) hope that a poster session will help spur active interest and involvement by making the program more visible to attendees. In other words, I will be advocating on behalf of legislative advocacy.
PLEASE IDENTIFY AT LEAST THREE LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR YOUR PROGRAM.
Learning Outcome One Attendees will learn of the urgent need for legislative advocacy.
Learning Outcome Two Attendees will learn about the ACRL Legislative Advocates program.
Learning Outcome Three Attendees will learn about how to apply to serve as a Legislative Advocate.
PLEASE PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL LEARNING OUTCOMES.
