New York University Division of Libraries is seeking a Librarian for Performing Arts to cover theater and drama, cinema studies, dance, acting, film and television, performance studies, and related programs at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts; the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development; and across the University. This tenure-track faculty position leads efforts to support teaching and learning, research, scholarship, and creative and artistic activities through building collections and delivering a program of outreach, engagement, instruction, and consultation.
This liaison librarian to performing arts disciplines at NYU will contribute to the development of distinctive, interdisciplinary, multi-format, and intersectional collections that serve the wide-ranging needs of students, artists, scholars, and researchers both locally and nationally. We seek a librarian who will build on existing public and research services and facilitate new modes of scholarly and artistic inquiry. We also seek a librarian who will collaborate with groups across NYU and New York City to develop outreach and engagement programs that build community and prioritize the needs of underrepresented communities.
The Librarian will work closely with colleagues across NYU Libraries, including the Librarian for Music and the staff of the Avery Fisher Center for Music and Media; a core of other library liaisons who serve arts, humanities, and social sciences scholars; and the libraries subdivisions and departments focused on teaching and learning, collection development and description, and scholarly communication. This librarian will also represent NYU in professional consortia and associations locally and nationally.
Research
Faculty librarians also pursue their own active research, contributing their expertise, experiences, creative or artistic outputs, and investigations to build new knowledge and make cultural contributions. The person in this position has wide latitude in determining their own research agenda in their chosen areas, and the Librarian for Performing Arts would find themselves well positioned to make substantive contributions to research in a number of areas, including, but not limited to: the underrepresentation of diverse voices in publishers' and libraries' performing arts collections; the challenges of collecting and preserving born-digital and informally published content produced by underrepresented content creators and performers; the provision of sustainable and equitable services to performing arts communities; and much more.

This particular position is part of our Transformative Humanities for All: Building and Sharing the Cultural Record cluster. The faculty in this cluster will augment NYU Libraries' capabilities to support academic and public knowledge production in the humanities and related disciplines at NYU and beyond. Positions in this cluster will contribute to NYU's research mission by building and extending interconnected knowledge, descriptive, curatorial, preservation, and technical services to support and distribute research and inquiry that centers diverse and underrepresented voices in the humanities and performing arts; by ethically developing, serving, and making accessible humanistic outputs within a larger information ecosystem concerned with openness, access, and the changing face of scholarship; and leading the Libraries' strategic contributions to the work of the emerging field of Public Humanities.
