    Changes and Challenges in Libraries in Latin America

     Program Description: 

    Join us for a look at libraries in Latin America, with a special focus on South America. Three librarians will talk about trends, changes and challenges faced by libraries in Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela. From creating modern library spaces, to providing access to digital tools and MakerSpaces, libraries in Latin America are adapting U.S. library trends to their unique clientele and creating their own successful library models.  

    Moderator: Carol BreyDirector, Quality of Life Department, City of Las Cruces, NM.

    Presenters:

    ·      Francisco Javier Bolaños has more than 15 years of experience in management and planning in libraries and cultural institutions in the public and
           private sectors.

    ·      Pedro Lutz, Director of Inter-institutional Projects and Libraries, Centro Colombo Americano, Bogota, Colombia.

    ·      Jesús Amado, Cultural Director, Centro Venezolano Americano del Zulia (CEVAZ), "Luis Guillermo Pineda" Library, Maracaibo, Venezuela.

     Carol Brey is currently the Director of the Quality of Life Department for the City of Las Cruces, New Mexico. She previously served as a Foreign Service Officer for the U.S. State Department and as the Director of the Office of American Spaces in Washington, DC and supporting American Spaces throughout South America. She is a past president (2004-2005) of the American Library Association.

    Francisco Javier Bolaños has more than 15 years of experience in management and planning in libraries and cultural institutions in the public and private sectors. He has served as consultant on the project "In Cali the Word Counts", to develop public policy for the City of Cali for reading, writing and speaking and as Advisor and Project Manager for nearly 10 years at the Fundacion Bibliotec of Colombia. 

    Pedro Lutz is the Director of Interinstitutional Projects and Libraries at the Centro Colombo Americano Bogota, a Binational Center (BNC.) He has coordinated the Libraries of the BNC for over 14 years, leading projects that strengthen the network of the country and regional Binational Centers. Two key projects initiated are the first network account of BNCs with OverDrive digital Library services and the creation of the Maker Week program in Colombia. 

    Jesús Amado is the Cultural Director at Centro Venezolano Americano del Zulia (CEVAZ). He served as adjunct professor at CEVAZ's Outsourcing English Program for private schools. As Extracurricular Coordinator and later Academic Director he developed and designed extracurricular activities exclusively to promote American culture.
