  • 1.  Open Access children's books in Arabic

    Posted Oct 23, 2022 01:24 PM

I am working on a project providing first language materials to children in refugee camps.  Is anyone aware of open access children's storybooks that are downloadable in Arabic?  Preferably through the use of an app on Goggle Play.  The books can be Arabic only or bilingual Arabic/English.  Ultimately, the books will be downloaded and used offline on a Kindle.  Thank you in advance.

Hi Janet,  I work with libraries primarily in Jordan.  Here are a few sites where I have found free Arabic books.

http://www.rampjo.org/ar/%D8%A8%D8%B1%D9%86%D8%A7%D9%85%D8%AC-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D9%83%D8%AA%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%AC%D8%AA%D9%85%D8%B9%D9%8A%D8%A9 - Free PDF books.  There's not an app that I know of.

https://digitallibrary.io/ar/ - Global Digital Library - You can set up a free account and then choose your language.  There doesn't seem to be a way to download, but perhaps if you contact them, they will work with you.

Room to Read, at literacycloud.org used to have some good books but when I checked today, there were no Arabic books listed.  They say they are redoing their website and that previous content isn't there but that they will be adding more.  I'm hoping for more Arabic.

I'm always on the lookout for more open access Arabic books to use with children in under-resourced communities, so I'll be curious to see what other responses you get.

    Hi Janet and Libby,

As Libby noted, at Room to Read, we are updating Literacy Cloud.  More titles will be added this week and next.  We are making sure that the technical bugs are resolved before uploading.  Another great open access source of downloadable children's books in many languages is Storyweaver. I just checked - there are books in Arabic!

Thanks, for the update. I am familiar with Room to Read, but haven’t looked at it in awhile. Each interface has its own challenges, but I am committed and will work through it. My primary interest is in Ethiopian languages, but need to add Arabic for the refugee camps in Sudan. We have sent a couple of World Possible‘s RACHEL servers. They have numerous Arabic databases, but overall limited resources for young children. Definitely a work in progress.

    Good Morning,

As a response to covid many Arabic language publishers are digitizing their collections. There are limited free resources.

However, YouTube has many recorded storytimes you can share.

    Sincerely,

    Michell Hackwelder.
