    • This program, to be presented by the ALA IRC United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Subcommittee, seeks to increase awareness about the UN SDGs and how libraries are well suited to assist to achieve the goals. All types of libraries help communities to move closer to development through programs and services. The 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been championed by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and the ALA United Nations SDGs as crucial to achieve development and a call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere. Libraries have a central role to help communities, cities and countries to achieve these goals.
The session will present examples of academic, public and school libraries contributing to achieve the 17 UN SDGs, and how IFLA and ALA are collaborating with different units within the United Nations. At the same time will highlight how partnerships can support libraries in helping to achieve the UN SDGs.

The 17 UN SDGs include goals supporting gender equality, zero hunger, no poverty, quality education, decent work and economic growth and reduced inequalities. These go hand in hand with the work of ALA in building a diverse and inclusive profession at the same time that recognize the intersectionality and complex natures of these matters.
