  • 1.  International Work Exchange Opportunities?

    Posted Mar 10, 2024 03:20 PM
Hello - I am new to IRRT and looking for opportunities to work in another country, ideally as part of a program that is similar to a work exchange.

Is anyone familiar with something like this?

    Thanks in advance.

    I am interested as well!
I found this opportunity a few years ago but COVID pretty much put a damper on any possibilities.
The Swiss Library Association (BBS) and the ALA International Relations Office (IRO) have agreed to work together to help facilitate exchanges between librarians in the two countries. This program was begun after the Swiss Library Association participated in the 1999 ALA Annual Conference. There are a number of exchange opportunities listed below. If you are interested in doing a library exchange in Switzerland please contact the IRO at intl@ala.org TYPES OF EXCHANGES POSSIBLE BETWEEN AMERICAN AND SWISS LIBRARIES AND LIBRARIANS 1.

I would be happy to help if folks want to try to resurrect the program or establish something similar with other countries.

Hi Regina – brilliant! This is exactly the kind of opportunity I am looking for. The only challenge is that I do not speak another language .

If that was not a stringent requirement, it looks fascinating .

I would also be interested in teaming up to do some research to see if Switzerland is still a viable program as well as what other public library work exchange programs are out there.

    Thank you so much.

I did a volunteer vacation in Ecuador in 2004. I organized a library & set up the catalog for an animal protection organization. I found the request on idealist.org. That web site has volunteer & paid positions listed.

I would be interested in something like that -- though I'm not sure anyone would be able to drag me back to the US afterwards! I already have the background in French and passing understanding German... but I'm just in school, not an established librarian.
